Photocopies and photographs, 2004-2010, [bulk, 2004].

Photocopies and copy print photographs of materials pertaining to the service of Colonel Timothy Vining, and officer in the Air Force who commanded air operations at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base in Uzbekistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Photocopies include emails, newspaper articles, and other manuscripts pertaining to Vining's time in Uzbekistan. The emails were sent home to his family between January and May 2004 and include information about his daily activities at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base (K2), interacting and providing supplies to local residents, and the relationship between the Uzbekistani military and U.S. forces. Vining also describes terrorist bombing attacks in Uzbekistan (March 29-April 2) and his disgust that terrorism had occurred in the country. Of particular interest is an email (February 1) that describes him wearing a scarf that was sent to him by his uncle, Ivan Schwartz. The scarf had been worn by Schwartz during his service in World War II, and was worn by Vining to honor the service of his uncle and the soldiers who had served in the past. Newspaper articles document Vining's service in Uzbekistan and a speaking engagement given about his service. Also included is a memorial for Vining's wife, Jody, who died in 2002. Copy print photographs include images taken by Vining while in Uzbekistan that depict him posing with various children and local residents. One interesting image shows Vining presenting an award while wearing the scarf that was given to him by his uncle.
